Chemical and Process Engineering

Summary

There is a wide range of research carried out within Chemical and Process Engineering (CAPE), including the areas of energy and fuels, biochemical processes, food process engineering, resources and environmental research, particle and spray technology, separation processes, simulation, control and computer modelling and thermophysical properties.

Chemical and Process Engineering's facilities include very well equipped and fully staffed mechanical and electronics workshops. A full range of computing facilities are available. CAPE has easy access, via the Engineering Library, to one of the best technical libraries in the Southern hemisphere. In addition to extensively instrumented chemical engineering process equipment for distillation, evaporation, liquid-liquid and gas-liquid contacting, there are a number of special units in the Department. A Special Purposes Laboratory is designed to enable dangerous, dusty and flammable experiments to be carried out safely. Special equipment includes a number of fully instrumented drying tunnels, a pilot scale spray dryer, supercritical extraction apparatus, a range of equipment for vapour-liquid equilibria, high precision PVT measurements on gases, and high precision microcalorimetry for heats of mixing of liquids. Potentiometric and potentiostatic apparatus is available for electrochemical and corrosion studies. Normal analytical facilities are available including G.L.C. and H.P.L.C., while X-ray, mass spectrophotometry and scanning electron microscope facilities are accessible in other laboratories on campus.
