Economics is a social science that studies the economic system. It is the study of how people respond to incentives in deciding how to use resources, and how these incentives change to reflect the underlying scarcity of the resources. More generally, economists apply their theoretical and empirical techniques to consider social phenomena involving both individual choice and sociat interaction.
