Natural Resources Engineering
Summary
*To find out more about the research of Natural Resources Engineering staff, please select a researcher from the Civil and Natural Resources Engineering Profile page (link under resources).
Natural Resources Engineering seeks to improve or maintain the sustainability of natural resource use through the creative design and wise application of technology. It takes into consideration both the impact of humans on natural systems and the impact of natural systems on humans.
Natural Resources Engineering is about the application of engineering (and social) science, a systems-based approach, technology and design for the sustainable development, management and conservation of our natural resources. These resources include land, soils, water, the atmosphere, renewable energy and biological resources, such as plants and animals. Examples of Natural Resources Engineering include:
- land resources: Integrated Catchment Management Analysis, Geographic Information Systems, surveying
- water resources: water supply for energy, irrigation and drinking/consumption
- energy resources: wind turbines, micro-hydro, biofuels
- biological resources: irrigated agriculture and horticulture
- waste resources: engineered wetland ecosystems for wastewater treatment, reusing wastes as natural capital.
