Summary
Aotahi: School of Māori and Indigenous Studies is keen to encourage excellence in Māori scholarship and research and does this via a number of partnerships involving South Island iwi, Ngai Tahu and Nga Mata Waka.
Research falls under several broad categories: Te Reo Māori, Polynesian and Māori Oral Traditions, Māori History, Māori Politics, The Treaty of Waitangi, Health, Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science, Indigenous Issues and Human Rights, Kapa Haka – Māori Performing Arts, Material Culture.
Māori language research centres on language acquisition and revitalisation.
Indigenous politics and political theory are core research areas which merge with interest in the politics of the Treaty of Waitangi and the politics of race and identity in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Polynesian and Māori Oral Traditions, Māori traditional material culture, museum studies, South Island language and mythology, and nineteenth-century manuscripts and waiata are further areas of strength.
