In mathematics there is a particular expertise in approximation theory, combinatorics, constructive mathematics, functional analysis, geometry, inverse problems and optimization theory.

In statistics, there is particular expertise in bioinformatics, computational statistics, ecological sampling, financial and medical statistics, probability theory and stochastic processes.

The department also hosts a biomathematics research centre involving statistical and mathematics modelling in a range of biological problems.
