Applied Mechanics Group

Research Group Summary

An ability to model the behaviour and response of systems governed by fundamental laws of mechanics underpins much applied engineering analysis. The applied mechanics research group conducts research with the aim of developing satisfactory predictive models for such systems. Such research often involves a synthesis of theoretical, numerical and experimental work. Topics currently under investigation include; dynamic modelling of structurally flexible manipulators, finite element modelling of unbounded wave propagation, micro-mechanical models for predicting the stiffness and mechanical properties of cellular materials, modelling of ocean-structure interaction, numerical modelling of duct acoustics, numerical modelling of tyre-pavement friction and noise generation, vibration and stability of beams and plates, the non-linear mechanics of plate deformation.
