Engineering Geology and Applied Hydrogeology

Research Group Summary

The Engineering Geology and Applied Hydrogeology research covers a range of disciplines including rock mechanics, soil mechanics, slope stability, hydrogeology, acid mine drainage, geohazards evaluation, and related urban planning.

The Department of Geological Sciences operates its own rock and soil mechanics laboratories, and has a close working relationship with the Civil Engineering Department including access to several of their laboratories. A significant proportion of the research undertaken relates to mining projects, both surface and underground, and hydrogeology research projects include groundwater resource evaluation and contaminant migration/remediation.

The following are the principal areas of current or recent interest:
-  Rock & Soil Mechanics
-  Hydrogeology
-  Geohazards & Planning
-  Environmental Management
