This is a participatory action research project, undertaken as a partnership between the a Northland secondary school, Tikipunga High School, and myself as an academic researcher. The school has a high proportion of Maori students and identified as drawing on a low socio-econmic population. The project has improvement of outcomes for all students as a key goal. It recognises that for change to take place teachers themselves need to be learners. Its long term aim is to develop the school as a sustainable learning community.
