Researcher Summary

NOTE: As of April 2016, I no longer work at the University of Canterbury; I am now at ViaStrada Ltd - http://viastrada.nz/user/glen

Increasingly my personal focus is in the areas of safety and sustainable transport. In particular, through my own research and that of my students, I have developed specialist expertise in planning and design for cycling, speed management devices, rural geometric design, and road safety models. Other research interests include sustainable transportation policies, pedestrian/cycle auditing, crash investigation, and rural highway simulation modelling.

Future Research

  • Effectiveness of Speed Limits and Traffic Management/Calming Treatments (speeds, crashes, volumes)
  • Effects of Cycling Facilities on Travel Behaviour (incl. surface colouring, pathway designs, bike boulevards)
  • Comparison of relative safety of different travel modes, controlling for exposure, environment, users, etc
  • Review of NZ policies/guidelines for setting speed limits, incl. lower speed limits
  • Feasibility of implementing US "pedestrian crosswalk" laws in New Zealand
  • Comparison IHSDM Traffic Analysis Module with TRARR and other rural operations tools
  • Development / Implementation of Campus Travel Plans (incl. introduction of free bus services)
  • Compare opinions on transport expenditure and perception of others’ opinions (politicians vs professionals vs public)
  • Driver understanding of Road Rules/Signs/Markings relative to their experience/age/gender/training

Key Methodologies

  • Design/analysis of traffic/transport surveys (speed, volume, behaviour, etc)
  • Database analysis of Road geometry data
  • Interrogation/Analysis of NZTA Crash Analysis System (CAS)
  • Simulation modelling of rural roads (TRARR, IHSDM)
  • Geometric design of horizontal/vertical road alignment and intersections
