My research is focused around the importance of being able to motivate initial teacher education students to develop positive attitudes towards science teaching and learning, leading to them becoming enthusiastic and committed teachers. The first research question being explored was, ‘What is happening in relation to the teaching and learning of science in New Zealand primary schools?’ As a pilot study a quantitative questionnaire and qualitative interviews were conducted with the teaching staff of seven primary schools (purposive sample), to determine the main factors, issues and concerns of current practice. Following this analysis a professional development programme consisting of four two hour workshops was conducted for the key staff members from each of the seven schools. The survey and interview process will be repeated after one year to complete this initial study. In response to an identified need for science teaching resources in Early Childhood, I have researched and written the first book, focusing on the changes that occur in the world of material, named ‘Science is ChildsPlay’ - Science for infants, toddlers and young children. This exploration is designed to occur within real life contexts that encourage the child to be connected with their world: particularly the social, spiritual and living environments.
